I don't know exactly when, but at one time during Walt's travels to Europe, he purchased complete sketchbooks as well as individual illustrations by German artist Heinrich Kley. I am also not sure wether Kley's widow Emily sold Walt the artwork or if he bought the pieces at art galleries.
But the fact is that today this unique, never published Kley inventory belongs to the Disney family.
During my recent visit to the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco I was thrilled to discover that visitors can now browse through a couple of oversized printed sketchbooks from the collection. There is a small Kley set up near the Museum's reception area.
Here are a few gorgeous sample pages.
Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteWhenever I see these collections in Disney's hands, Larson's picture next to Steinlen's book or that kind of cross pollination, I can't help but be surprised by the level of information these people have... as if it could be otherwise. What a snob I am!
ReplyDeleteI love the expressive ink lines on the last two images in particular. Gorgeous! On another note related to the Walt Disney Family Museum, and in light of the recent Reitherman's presentation, would it be possible to encourage a similar Bambi talk with the actors who voiced Bambi, Flower and Thumper? I see they were highlighted in a recent posting. That would be a wonderful opportunity!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for sharing this. Kley’s work is wonderful.
