Here are just a few examples that show the caliber of talent Walt Disney employed to help style his animated movies.
Mary Blair, Eyvind Earle, Walt Peregoy and Ken Anderson all had a huge influence on the look of a number of films. The thing they all had in common was thinking outside of the box. After Snow White and Dumbo, these artists represented new visions for color, design and art direction.
Their gutsy visual experiments helped Disney animation to move on to new horizons.

ReplyDeleteGreat post
ReplyDeleteDo you think animators think outside of the box and do they have to?
If you want to be inventive you have to try new things and take risks. That's W. Disney's philosophy in a nut shell.
DeleteI wish the producers these days thought more outside the box.
ReplyDeleteIs Walt Peregoy still alive? I really want to write to him
ReplyDeleteI believe he still is.
DeleteW. Peregoy is doing well. Just write to Disney studios with the request to forward your letter.
DeleteMaybe it is because of 101 Dalmations, but I have always loved Walt Peregoy's style. It is so appealing to me.
ReplyDeleteIs there a particular favorite style of yours (these films and others)?
ReplyDeleteIt keeps changing. At the moment I prefer the early Xerox films like 101 Dalmatians and Sword in the Stone.
DeleteAndreas, would you know who designed the backgrounds for the sword in the stone? Also who was the color stylist?
ReplyDeleteKen Anderson was the art director, Walt Peregoy was head of backgrounds and influenced the color styling.
DeleteThank you for sharing these. Amazing images were excatly, what i needed as reference and inspiration when test some colors and style for my animation.
ReplyDeleteGood lord, can it even GET any more inspirational?! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing these!
