Jafar by Nik Ranieri

Nik animated a bunch of great scenes with Jafar way back. He also did this sketch of - I think you know who. This was late in production when we were animating Jafar with a Sultan hat.

I sure wish Jeffrey well in his future endeavors.

  1. Good ole Nik Ranieri. I love his FB page and his animation almost mirrors Frank Thomas in a way. Anyway, like yourself, his stuff was very inventive when 2D was still around. I want to help bring it back to theaters.

    2. It seems to be proliferating quite well on TV - much more than in theaters.

  3. Oh, Jafar... I'm so glad he didn't stick with that sultan's outfit for long. He's much more fetching in black :D

    1. Andreas, I was recently studying that first scene between Jafar and the sultan, when they are discussing Jasmine's predicament and Jafar asks for the ring. God, I never get tired of admiring Jafar's animation; even when I was a tiny kid, I knew I was watching something special. So lifelike, yet so beautifully stylized. It's especially apparent in that scene, with his every inhalation and the play of his elaborate (but completely relate-able) facial expressions. He moves in a sort of dance.

I was wondering if you happened to remember who was supervising on that particular scene? Do you remember much in general about who supervised each of his scenes? I know you did on the opening scene in the desert with the scarab beetle (from an earlier post).

    2. Apologies. Obviously you were supervising on each scene; what I meant to ask was, do you happen to remember, for each of Jafar's scenes, which of the five animators (you, Ron Husband, Nik Ranieri, Lou Dellarosa, and Ken Duncan) worked on them? I'm trying to see if different styles can be spotted in Jafar, much like how one can pretty easily tell the difference between Glen Keane's Ariel and Mark Henn's Ariel.

  4. Ol' Katzenberg always was prime fodder for caricatures around Disney...

  5. That's right Katzenberg was around Disney for pushing the movies to look more modern how Disney is working on The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King and that's why he was a genuies with Peter Shnider and Howard Ashman and Roy E Disney.
