During my last semester at at school in Germany I already knew that Disney was producing a film titled The Fox and the Hound. It inspired me to try and keyframe a fox jumping in a circle. My analysis was far from perfect, but it still turned out to be a useful exercise.
At that time my life drawing teacher encouraged me to draw with an ink pen instead of pencil or charcoal. Scary at first (you can't erase), I eventually really enjoyed using a thin felt pen.
These cows were sketched near my home on a farm (ballpoint pen). As far as animal drawing I needed to teach myself, the school didn't offer any such classes. Still, fond memories of learning, and hoping to work for Disney one day.
I love your drawings! I hope all is well. Perhaps you can help me with some research and overall Disney loving curiosity! ;) I recently read your post on Eleanor Audley. Needless to say I am a super duper fan! Can you share more about her and what she was like. Sources on her are very limited. Well, there are some elements of 2D in Disney's new movie 'Moana'. Does that count?
DeleteNo, because they're only reducing 2D animation to being merely a gimmick for CGI, instead of treating it as being an art form on its own merits like Princess and the Frog. Think of how CGI was blended onto Silver in Treasure Planet, only in reverse.
DeleteAll Disney is showing with Moana is that they still think that their films can only be good computer animated, so 3D characters continue to overshadow whatever 2D art there is in the movie, because 3D is "better".
There's more hand-drawn movies being made now than ever. If you miss it, just look for it!
DeleteThat's not true at all. Theatrical hand-drawn movies flourished for a long time before Toy Story was made, but now you rarely ever see them because of CGI taking over the animation industry in America. Whatever hand-drawn movies there have been recently have often been foreign stuff.

DeleteI'd suggest ballpoint. I've been sketching in ballpoint lately and I get quite interesting results this way.
