The Princess and the Frog at the Academy

Great night at the Academy last Thursday. A 10th anniversary screening of the film and a panel.
So nice to see everybody again. I was asked: "Does it feel like 10 years ago to you?"
Heck yes! So much has happened since we made that film.

After Frog Disney  gave us one more shot at pencil animation with Winnie the Pooh.
As soon as it was announced that that film's release date had changed to go head to head with the last Harry Potter film, we knew...

Anyway I had fun working on both films, Mama Odie was a blast to animate (she should have had one more sequence in the film though, perhaps the at the ending)

Here are a few Vis Dev pieces by various artists from the movie.

  4. Really a shame that Disney no longer wants to do traditional animation. The animation in Princess and the Frog was gorgeous. As was the work done on Winnie the Pooh for that matter. I would love to see a return to form by Disney at some point.

  6. Wow, I did't even know about this and I was a lead animator on the film. I am here in LA and could have attended but there was no invitation. Well, I guess I was never that important to the company anyway.

  7. So you're saying they changed Winnie the Pooh's release date to go up against Harry Potter? That just makes it sound like intentional sabotage of their 2D animation revival.

  8. Andreas, I'm a 4th grade teacher at an inner city school and you would be thrilled to know how beloved this film is to children of about 9-10 years old. I'm intrigued and pleased at how often the students will reference it or bring it up when discussing Disney. I feel like it has almost grown in popularity compared to when it was released.

  9. Andreas, you mentioned that there should have been one more scene with Mama Odie at the end of the movie. Was this originally planned and then scrapped or is it your personal opinion? If so, what kind of scene did you envision with her?

  10. Hi Andreas,

I don’t know if you remember me but we met the night of the screening and I just wanted to reach out to you and tell you how amazing it was to be able to speak with you for even the most brief of moments. To me it felt like I was speaking to you for hours, even though I know it wasn’t that long.

I’m a 2D animation student at Columbia College Chicago but I’m out in LA for the rest of the semester. Disney animation in general was such an inspiration for me going to school and studying animation but your work has to be my biggest influence of all. Since I can remember it was a goal of mine to be able to meet you and speak with you regarding the industry and ask for any wisdom you could share, so that evening meant so much and I wanted to thank you again!
