WILDWOOD

Go to your local theatre and watch WILDWOOD. I can not recommend this film enough. Such an amazing story, and so beautifully crafted. Animation History!

  1. Saw it two days ago, but my local theater isn't making it easy. They only have three screenings each week, and they're all at quarter past five in the evening, which is when I'm usually either on my way home from work or having supper.

I liked it a lot. I've always liked stop motion animation. I think I think what originally drew me to it is all the detail that's usually put into it. The way things look realistically worn and dirty, and that's something that took years for computer animations to catch up with. (I think Wall-E may have been the first one where I thought "ok, now they're getting it".)

(Hand-drawn animation has more of a "story book come to life" feel to me, so I never really understood why it's so rare now. Seems like two completely different styles to me, that should be able to co-exist.)

Of course, I realize that modern stop motion is a mixture of many different techniques: puppets, hand-drawn animation (no, really), CGI, ... but their philosophy seems to be to do as much as they sensibly can in frame, and I respect that. What I've seen of those puppets on YouTube is absolutely insane. To me all animation seems pretty close to magic anyway, but stop motion seems particularly daunting.

My favorite Laika movies are still Coraline and Paranorman. I think the smaller scale of them make them feel more relatable to me. But I'd still probably put Wildwood one alongside Kubo and the Two Strings.

  2. Saw it a couple of times, first time a week ago, and then a second time yesterday with my brother, since we're both big fans of stop motion. My feelings on it are a little complicated. For the most part, it is a well crafted film with gorgeous stop motion animation, and story-wise, it definitely has a solid core, but it can get a little too busy, with how many characters are introduced and all the world building it includes, and it wasn't the most emotionally engaging or tonally consistent. That said, I am glad I saw it, even if it could have been better. (Coraline is still my favorite of Laika's movies.)
