Life imitates Art

This is Milt Kahl as he reenacts a scene he animated, when Medusa affectionately embraces her alligators Nero and Brutus. It was filmed for a Disney Channel TV show from 1981 called "The Illusion of Life". The program promoted classic Disney Animation, Frank and Ollie's book with the same title and the release of The Fox and the Hound.
You can find it on YouTube, and if you watch very carefully, you will spot me in one short scene drawing Princess Eilonwy from The Black Cauldron, the upcoming epic from the studio.

  6. Ah, Medusa was always one of my favorites watch. So much character! I also remember watching the Illusion of Life on YouTube earlier this year, I believe, after *finally* buying the actual book. It was a very enjoyable and informative program and the book is proving the be just as awesome. Thanks for the post!

  7. I was wondering, Andreas, which scenes was John Lounsberry directing on The Rescuers before he died? I remember reading that Frank and Ollie had given Lounsberry credit for being the best at following Milt's drawings. Did Milt have the same high regard for John Lounsberry's work?

    1. You'll probably want to see these animator drafts:

    2. Milt thought that Lounsbery was good at broad characters,
but that you couldn't give him an assignment like Wendy or Alice.

  8. Great stuff as always. I'm not sure where else to ask this, but I was curious if you've tried the new Palomino Blackwing 602 pencils? I think they're awesome, but I can't say how they stand up to the original.

  9. I think that was part of the original Disney anthology program that aired on network TV at the time (I think this aired on NBC when the show was titled "Disney's Wonderful World").

  11. Andreas - I'm a huge fan of your work and your blog. I'm not sure where else there is to ask you, but I have a question. What's your favorite single piece of animation work you've done? Thanks!

    1. Medusa is breathtaking but Cruella deVil is a better actress.
