Freddie Girls

For a change of pace, here are a few Fred Moore girls you hopefully haven't seen yet.
Just when you thought you have seen all of them, in books or online, a new auction suddenly offers  brand-new ones. It's obvious why everybody at the studio wanted a drawing of a Freddie girl.
They are full of charm and innocence….most of the time. I have a few, which can't be posted here. I'd have to open an adult only blog, which I won't do.
It really wasn't that unusual for Disney animators to do gag drawings with adult humor. Kimball, Milt, Marc and others exchanged sketches "that were not meant for the public to see" as Alice Davis puts it.
So in some ways these animation legends were just like regular guys.

An animation drawing from the Donald Duck short "Duck Pimples"

  2. Great stuff, Mr. Deja. Always enjoy seeing more Fred Girls. Few things in life are better!
Did you and the other Disney animators make gag drawings as well? I thought it was a compulsory requirement in the grand traditions of animation.

    1. We did exchange gag drawings once in a while. But I have the feeling that the old guys really went to town.
Our production deadlines were often tighter than theirs, which left us with less time for fun stuff like that.

  3. Oh man, I remember that Donald Duck cartoon. It used to terrify me as a kid!
    These sketches are beautiful

  4. Wow, I always thought Milt Kahl animated that girl on "Duck Pimples". And the black dress girl, what a pose! Fred Moore was a genius. His mermaids on Peter Pan are a high point in his design. Thanks for the post!

    1. You are right. Milt did animate most of the scenes with the girl.

    2. I thought Freddie's mermaids in Peter Pan were beautiful, but not like this artwork! Thanks for sharing! It's a shame though that Freddie was killed in a road accident 2 months prior to the release of Peter Pan, though; that's my favorite Disney movie made when Disney was alive & 6th overall behind The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin & The Lion King! My Top 5 are all films you've worked & I've got to say for each one, excellent work, Andreas! AND I can't wait to see those 2 projects you're working on now!

  7. I had never seen Duck Pimples before this post, didn't even know it existed. It's unusually dark and surreal for a Disney short, I think. To me it feels quite (to quote Nick Ranieri) 'Warner Brother-ish'. Not that Disney hadn't done dark or surreal before, it's just that I've never seen both approaches so strongly featured in the same short.

Until Burny Mattinson mentioned it in the Animation Podcast, I had never heard of Casey Bats Again (he referred to it as Casey's Girls, I think). Another great example of Freddie Moore girls.

  8. Great stuff. I have a Feddy Moore original at home. One of the treasures I managed to get out of Disney.
