Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas talk about animating Pinocchio in this clip from a 1988 UK TV show on the life of Walt Disney. They discuss acting issues as well as technical challenges.
Wow, thank, didnt seen that video before. So brilliantly animated. And there was WEIGHT , on that Frank´s cage scene. Wow again, what a amazing masters.
I was literally terrorized by the donkey-transformation scene when I was a kid. Still I find it a very strong scene. The animation inside the cage was a massive scene, all of this created 72 years ago! This commands respect!
Animating all the forces and weight in Pinocchio's body when he's tumbling in the moving cage, and doing the acting at the same time! That's a real bit of challenge, and good opportunity to show the wonderful skill of Frank Thomas!

An artist named Bob Jones created the puppet as reference for the animators.

Thank you for sharing!
Excellent interview. And I just watched Pinocchio again last week. I think the transformation scene is the single most chilling footage ever animated.
ReplyDeleteThe clips are always so insightful. :D
