…named Milt Kahl would be 105 years old today. This photo was taken during one of my earlier visits to Marin County, where he spent the rest of his years after leaving Disney Studios.
I remember asking him if he was going down to LA to join a Snow White anniversary reunion organized by Disney, but he had no interest. Animation was in his past, now he enjoyed being remarried and seeing his children more often. He was a happy man, and I was happy and grateful that Milt took the time to see me and answer my many question about the art of animation.
Here are a few visual reminders of his extraordinary talent, covering the second half of his career.
There is plenty of Milt’s artwork to see on this blog. Here is the link to my first post on Milt:
Happy Birthday, Milt Kahl! Great post.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous art. Really feel alive... Happy birthday to one of the all time greats!
ReplyDeleteAnother brilliant dose of Milt Kahl! What a wonderful surprise today. :D
ReplyDeleteStunning. Interesting that he preferred discussing animation in a philosophical manner when he retired. He must have been more analytical and practical earlier in his career, and maybe after years all that stuff became second nature.
ReplyDeleteIt's also interesting that apart from the cranium sphere, and some indication of Alice's ribcage, there's not much construction drawing going on. Don Bluth wrote that he would start with a silhouette and fill in the stuff in between! as if he could see the drawing before he drew it.
I've noticed that you worked on a few of the same films as Stan Green, I imagine you didn't miss the opportunity to learn what you could from him too?
also I just noticed that your Milt Kahl birthday post from last year had the cel of that top drawing http://andreasdeja.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/happy-birthday-milt-kahl.html
DeleteA very happy birthday to Milt. Thank you as always, Andreas.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Milt! I wonder If he really knew just how legendary and relevant his work would continue to be after his death
ReplyDeleteThat scene where Tramp shakes off the water is amazing.
ReplyDeleteTHANKS ANDREAS!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAndreas i found a 8 second video of Tigger in pencil test saying he loves firecrackers. Why was that scene not in the Winnie the Pooh movie?
ReplyDeleteNo, it wasn't. I animated this scene as a test before production began.
