Bambi Academy Event

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the release of Disney's Bambi, the Academy in LA is going to host a panel discussion, and I feel honored to be a part of it. This event will take place on May 15.
I had the pleasure of meeting Peter Behn (voice of Thumper) and Donnie Dunagan (voice of Bambi) a number of years ago, and I look forward to talking to them again.

A reminder of the caliber of artists who were part of this incredible film. These signatures are on the title page of the out of print Bambi Sketchbook.

Marc Davis spent several years in story before animating the character of Flower.

A long vertical layout from the film's opening sequence.

It takes a lot of guts to be simple when it comes to animation backgrounds. This film would have looked very different if it wasn't for the dramatic artistic vision of Tyrus Wong.

I posted about my first get together with Bambi's voice actor Donnie Dunagan here:

  1. Bambi would have looked very different if Gustaf Tenggren's concept art for this film were used

  2. A few years back I asked you for a Bambi drawing at CTN because I knew you had worked on Bambi II. I think I caught you off guard - "I haven't drawn Bambi in years so we'll see if I remember how!" It's of course a great drawing and I have it framed at home. Thanks again!

  3. What a shame that Tyrus isn't around for this. Without exaggerating, I think Bambi is my favourite artwork of the 20th century. Everything about it is perfectly in tune, in my opinion.

  4. Andreas, my favorite artwork it's Bambi adolescent wen he's a young adult, I think Milt Kahl drew this or maybe Marc Davis.

  5. Did Tyrus Wong acted as consultant on Bambi II?

  6. I have the Bambi Sketchbook, minus all the signatures on the title page, of course. Bambi is my favorite movie of all time. I saw it for the first time in 1988, which was the last time it had a wide release in cinemas. I saw it several times during that run. The last time I saw Bambi on the big screen was when the student association of McGill University in Montreal rented it for one showing. I painted ten foot long banner in gouache on poster paper with the scene where Bambi is nose to nose with Flower to advertise the projection planned by the student association. It was hung in their cafeteria and promptly stolen. *laugh* I eventually got it back, but after the projection had taken place. Watching Bambi in a theater setting with dozens of university students reacting to scenes in my favorite film was a trip. 8^)
