The color drawing of Scar is the very first drawing I did of the character as I was trying to design him.
I remember the directors asking me to add some "cheek hair" to his face...and that was it. The graphic appearance of Scar was set.
This is a key animation rough from the Be Prepared sequence. Scar is yelling at the Hyenas:"There will be a king!" I remember animating this scene vividly.
Scar moves forward, then upward during the dialog. I thought this is a chance to move his mane in a dramatic way. Lots of secondary action on all of that hair.
And since the staging is basically an upshot, I wanted to show Scar in that up perspective for his second main pose. I had studied drawing dramatic head angles from Milt Kahl's animation of Bagheera and Shere Khan.
When a scene calls for this kind of an angle, boy, it can be so rewarding. It might be tricky to get the drawing just right, but it is so worth trying.
This scene was a lot of fun to animate.
I just noticed the "Maybe I shoulda done more" lament in your last post. When I look at that fantastic top drawing of Scar I wonder, "How?" Sharing your love of art --- all schools of art, not just animation ---- represents such a cool gift to your fans. [Oddly, I think it's that same love of art ---accompanied by the ease with which you produce art ----that makes you different than some of your heroes. Except for Marc, they weren't collectors of art, they weren't on the lecture circuit, they didn't attempt to outdo Don Quixote by producing their own feature. One of your fellow animators told me "Andreas is the master of the 2 minute drawing. Drawing is easy for him. He doesn't have to push himself. He gets to enjoy life"]......
ReplyDeleteThat's a blessing, not a curse, my friend.
Thank you, Mike. All this goes back to the letter Disney sent me way back when I was a kid: "Learn how to draw, and observe the world around you. We'll teach you how to animate." Those words sent me on a mission. I took that advice very seriously. And it turned out to be a ton of fun, learning how to draw.
Delete...and ---if you'll allow me just one more fawning observation--- you're still that same 'kid': life hasn't seemed to knock any of that early exuberance outta you....
