Frank Thomas' Lady

A beautiful character layout sketch of Lady is being offered currently at Heritage Auctions. Frank Thomas drew this lovely pose of Lady as he was planing the scene. The size of the character, the camera fielding etc.

Her concerning attitude is toward Jock and Trusty. Lady explains her hurt feelings when her human owners start to treat her differently than before. A baby is on its way.

As you can see here, Frank worked on his drawings in order to get the right emotion while defining the proper anatomy of a cocker spaniel. Absolutely Beautiful!

  1. Hi Andreas,

I hope you are well and that you had a good time in good company last Tuesday ;)

The drawing of Lady is very sensitive - one deeply feels her anxiety and sadness at the attitude of her owners. It's a magnificent sketch, full of emotion!

I recently introduced my sister to the movie, and she completely fell under its spell, as much for the artistic direction as for the characters. Unsurprisingly, her favorite scene remains the famous sequence at Tony and Joe's restaurant, wonderfully animated by maestros Frank Thomas and John Lounsbery.

I wanted to ask you a question, if I may. During the production of Peter Pan, we know that Milt Kahl was very frustrated – even jealous – that he didn't have the chance to animate Captain Hook (assigned to Frank Thomas), and that he found himself working on Peter Pan and Wendy, characters he found less challenging. Given that he was then teamed up with Frank Thomas from the start of the production of Lady and the Tramp, in particular to develop the character of the Tramp, did you hear any stories or anecdotes indicating that there was sometimes a certain tension between them, in connection with Milt's resentment towards Frank during the previous production?

Thank you very much and have a great day.

  2. Hi Andreas,

I hope this message finds you well. I’m fairly sure you remember me—I was a CalArts student during the 2002–2006 era, and we’ve crossed paths a few times here on your blog and at various animation events. A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure of saying hi to you at Priscilla’s Coffee in Burbank—my favorite spot! It was great to see you, and I’m so glad to see you’re doing well after your amazing run at Disney.

I was wondering if I could send you a more personal letter. If you’d be open to it, I’d love for you to reach out to me at michael2d81@gmail.com. Of course, if you prefer correspondence through a fan mail address or another method, I’d be happy to follow that route instead.

Thank you so much for your time, and I hope you have a wonderful week.

    Warmly,
    Mike
