More Maleficent

This is a powerful scene, Maleficent is in full control. Her curse has come true, Aurora touched the spindle and lies dead on the floor. The Three Fairies are too late.
“You poor, simple fools..thinking you could defeat ME (the mistress of all evil).”
It is one of my favorite Maleficent moments, and Marc Davis gave the character a majestic but evil appearance. These are the drawings of a master at the top of his form. Her expressions are demonic, yet beautifully designed. And boy…do I love her oversized, expressive, claw-like hands.

I will be talking much more about Maleficent and all of Marc Davis’ characters as well as his Disneyland designs and Fine Art at the Walt Disney Family Museum on Saturday, September 13.
Bob Kurtz, animation artist and producer extraordinaire, who was a student of Marc at Chouinard Art Institute, will co-host this talk on the art of Marc Davis with me.

It is an afternoon, I am very much looking forward to.

  2. Sleeping Beauty has always been my favorite Disney classic, design-wise. Not surprising, considering the effort made to lmake the movie visually perfect and unique.
I remeber owning a Super 8mm reel of the film's third act (heavily cut to fit the short running time allowed by the format) as a kid. Years later I dusted that footage off and I started to watching it over and over again through a small moviola viewer in order to study the motion and design of Samson the horse.

  7. That's funny cause I watched "Sleeping Beauty" last night and this morning because of the Maleficent moments. They were the best part of the movie. Thanks Andreas! P.S. What did you thought of the 2014 with Angelina Jolie?

  8. Absolutely magnificent. Drawings like these show precisely why Maleficent is such an ultimate villain.

    1. Andreas, Disney California Adventure Park just had a "Maleficent and Other Fairies" exhibit. I created a paper sculpture and many talented artists contributed their own unique work.
Meeting and talking with the other artists is always my favorite part of these events. I have pictures on my blog and website: www.BritniBrault.com
