Cinderella Mix

A few pieces of art from the sixty-six year old Cinderella, a film whose success saved the Disney Studio.
The artwork above was done for a record album. You'd think that salmon pink as a base color might not look good, but it sure does here. The more obvious choice would have been a night blue.

A beautiful clean up drawing from an Eric Larson scene. Even if you had life action reference as a guide for the animation, this type of realism is VERY HARD to draw!!

A great Mary Blair piece. Two basic colors, blue and white with pink and yellow accents.

Even as black & white prints, still stunning.

I am not sure if this is her work as well, it might be by John Hench.

A cel from the Sweet Nightingale song sequence. A great example of reducing the complex human body to very simple, animatable forms.

Again, a very simple background, yet so effective.

Actress Helene Stanley acts out a scene in which she is entering an imaginary coach that will take her to the ball. I don't know the name of the actress who plays the Fairy Godmother.
The following film still is from the same scene.

Some images Heritage Auctions.

  1. Milt really pushes the pose of the Fairy Godmother from the live action

    1. If you can understand French, here she is in Paris (Place de la Concorde) being interviewed; she spoke "broken" French, her parents being both French! Walt Disney saw her when she was 14; she was a dancer and singer. The video sound only starts at 30 seconds in! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRI4HBLrYio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRI4HBLrYio

  3. man, it's difficult to draw characters like that in a plain pose, but to draw them thousands of times in really specific different poses, from different angles must require some real expertise. And of course that's before they start moving!

  4. I love the live action of Cinderella with Lily James she is beautifull and she play very good for the character, even Cate Blanchett for Lady Tremaine the Wicked Stepmother and of corse Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother she is a wonderfull character.
If Mark Davis, Milt Kahl, Ollie Johnston and Franklin Thomas will be there i think thay will be very proud and happy to see the live action of Cinderella, Alice in Wonderlad and Alice Through the Looking-Glass, Maleficent and The Jungle Book how the movies change of animation to live action.

  5. Dear Mr. Deja,
I remember from an auction a while ago:

Both paintings were ascribed to Mary Blair.
    Best, Skye
