A Must Have

I mean it. This new Ueber Coffee Table book by Taschen is one of the best books on Disney Animation ever. There is so much new visual material, it will make your head spin. I did not write any of the book's chapters, but I was a consultant on it. A true labor of love by everyone involved.

I posted a couple of key drawings from this scene with Ferdinand and the Matador, clearly inspired by the story sketches:

The visual material includes all stages of production, from designs and story sketches to final film frames. There are also notes from story sessions, screen credits and behind the scenes photos.
The book weighs a ton, 624 pages with over 1500 images.
Christmas came early this year!

  4. I got my copy for at least 900 DKK (can't remember the exact price, but it was around that without counting the amount for shipment) a month ago, and my favourite chapters are already Snow White and Alice in Wonderland. The story notes in Snow White excite me, and a few pastel sketches in Alice stimulate me as well.

  5. Would you ever consider doing a book on the Modern Stylized period at Disney; perhaps with an emphasis on Tom Oreb and Eyvind Earl?

  6. Hey Andreas, I just moved to a city with a great zoo (Dublin) and I was wondering if you could recommend some books/videos/etc about live animal drawing?
I have the Ken Hultgren book already, and it's great

    1. German drawing teacher Gottfried Bammes has a few books out on animal anatomy, some in English. He is not that great regarding motion, but his stuff is solid and clear to understand. Here is a link to his largest book (in German) from Amazon UK:

    2. oh wow, thanks! I'd never heard of him. I'm really inspired by yours and Marc Davis' zoo drawings, so I'm aiming to get into the same habit, now that I can.
      thanks!

    3. I'm not as close to my nearest zoo (Belfast!) but I also enjoy getting out for some live animal drawing when I can. If Andreas doesn't mind I'd like to recommend the websites of a few sellers on Amazon: the Book Depository; Wordery; and Kennys.ie. Kennys is great - I've used it a few times - and often has titles a little cheaper than UK shops, including Bammes' other animal art books, but unfortunately not in the case of Große Tieranatomie!

Regarding the book that's the main subject of this post: I don't doubt the post title, just from the images shown. It looks fantastic. But it'll have to go on the wishlist for a while, until I can scrape a few pennies. A lot of blogs I follow are producing or presenting fascinating books recently, which is great, but a little problematic for the set budget! :)

  8. Hi Andreas! I just wanted to thank you for your dedication to keep those of us that are interested in animation, Disney and art in the know and for your talent with your art work! Something I admire tremendously. Do you ever feel that the live action movies that are benign made are somewhat an insult to the Disney legacy since Disney himself had the choice to make live action and at one point they were pushing him to make more live action and he declined as animation was always his heart? When I see the live action films I feel like it's somewhat insulting to the artists and their talents and what they created and I would like to know your thoughts since you participated in those films?

    1. To be honest I am indifferent about those live action remakes.
I haven't seen them all, but I will watch Beauty & the Beast, because an actor friend of mine is in it.
