Just a Great Drawing

Ever since I saw a publicity photo of a young Milt Kahl holding a drawing of Brer Rabbit, I realized that this man is an extraordinary artist.
There was nobody, at Disney or anywhere else, who drew like this. The mix of appeal, anatomical "cartoony" accuracy and overall insight into the character is breathtaking. And Milt maintained this level of excellence for twenty-four frames per second. It is a shame that drawings like this one had to be cleaned up by an assistant. How wonderful it would be to see pencil tests of Milt's rough animation for Song of the South.
As Milt himself put it :"That picture was a high for personality animation."

  2. Hello Andreas,
Thank you so very much for taking time to research and post this great inspirational artwork over the years, I never miss a post. I felt the same way when I first saw this drawing, though I may not have put it into words, there are "rabbit drawings" and "rabbit drawings" but this one has it all. I was lucky enough to have worked with the great Don Bluth and his artists in the 80s/90s. I noticed you once you posted a John Pomeroy scene from the Rescuers. Lets not forget the incredible Linda Miller she's also an animation giant.

  4. You don't see artistry like that in CGI. I mean, that drawing speaks volume.

  6. The animated parts of Song of the South are an absolute blast. You can tell the animators really enjoyed themselves. I also think the live action/animation mix parts look better than Mary Poppins, despite it being 20 years earlier

  9. I am obsessed with this image... the ultimate appeal. I can only try to even come a fraction as close when drawing these characters. Great to have a larger version of it now.

Thanks for sharing as always. I practically never comment but I’m saving all the artwork. I’m lucky since Wil, who made a bunch of the recent scans on here, loves to show us the posts at work and share his knowlegde about the animators and their drawings.

I’ve got a question too, maybe you have an idea. I KNOW I’ve seen a drawing somewhere on the internet once of Panchito riding his horse SeΓ±or Martinez. It looked like Moore drew it, though it might be one of the other animators too, I’m not too good at regocnising their styles. SeΓ±or Martinez always appeared alongside Panchito in the newspaper comics drawn by Paul Murry, but it makes me curious who designed the character and whether he was ever planned to be animated. Do you have any clue? Paul Murry definitely deserves more regocnition for his wonderful comic drawings from the 1940s, the Panchito ones especially are some of the must dynamic and fun character poses I’ve ever seen in Disney comics.
