Somehow, that early image of Gurgi as a hunchbacked human reminds me a lot of Quasimodo...

DeleteI was wondering if The Black Cauldron looks like The Lord of the Rings style in the 1970s before Peter Jackson took the idea in the 2000s.
ReplyDeleteDo you recall how and why the decision was made to turn the Gwythaints from the large feathered birds they were in the novels into the reptilian dragons they are in the final film? I've been curious about this for quite some time.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I don't recall when the decision about the Gwythaint's appearance was made. After Tim Burton's "flying hand" idea got rejected, the Pterodactyl concept won out.

DeleteI know I've seen concepts of them as birds, vultures, the "flying hands", and the eventual Pterodactyls. For the purposes of the film, I feel that they worked really well. I love how their wings are semi-transparent membranes.
I know this movie doesn't get a lot of love, but I think the animation and the backgrounds especially are gorgeous. It's sad that it's so often overlooked.

Did you working with Tim Burton at the Disney studios on The Black Cauldron, and have you see Alice in Wonderland the live action in 2010, I think he was a genuineness with his art of Fantasy Gothic.
