TS Sullivant 3

Another selection of TS Sullivant illustrations from Life Magazine.
The beautiful balance between detail and simplification is something worth studying. Look at the lioness in the first image for example. Her face, hands and feet are drawn with realism, her upright body pose is effectively simple.
Everything reads very well. Lesson: Simplicity is best, add a few details to give the design some texture and focus.

The rhino in the next cartoon is pure joy, proportions and appeal to perfection.
Sullivant draws everything well, and with a sense of invention. Bunnies, tigers, monkeys, humans and even dinosaurs. Although the dialogue on that one makes you kind of sick, knowing what it refers to. Gotta love your animals...

On a different note, Milt Kahl's daughter Sybil has left a comment on the Madame Medusa post.
It's pretty funny, check it out!

  1. Hi Mr. Deja
I'm so glad I found your blog! As a huge fan of Disney (you know, the these-movies-are-my-childhood type), I've always loved the behind the scenes as much as the films themselves. The classic hand drawn animation is amazing; really intriguing and mesmerizing and definitely something I would love to try. You are one of the faces that stood out the most in the "Making of" videos, especially since you drew some of the best characters. So I guess this is just one big thank you!

  6. I'm happy to know that animators, such as yourself, are still active in the community. I has just gone to Austin Comiccon 2011 this past weekend and met another animator who you might know, Terry Naughton. He had amazing stories to tell and had me standing for an hour while I listened, but I received an awesome Zazu drawing!

I hope to see you at a convention sometime and have a chat! Also, would there be an way to contact you about questions?

Keep posting up more artists and your thoughts!

  7. Thanks so much for posting these! I remember you showing some work by this artist at a presentation once and I fell in love with his style, but foolishly did not write down his name.

What I like especially is his ability to push shapes and such, but be able to fully realise them anatomically so they make sense and feel real. Too often it feels like one has to make a choice between realism and caricature, and the more pushed a drawing is, the more flat and graphic it has to be – but these manage to be both graphic and perfectly structured.
