Happy 100th Birthday, Ollie Johnston

When I think about Ollie, certain things come to mind:
Many great conversations, stimulating inspiration and my sincere admiration for him and his art.
Ollie's animation touched so many of us.
Pinocchio, Bambi, Alice, Mr. Smee, the dogs from Lady & the Tramp, the Three Fairies in Sleeping Beauty, Pongo & Perdi, Archimedes, Baloo & Mowgli, Duchesse & the Kittens, Prince John & Sir Hiss, Penny & Rufus and many short films.

For The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Ollie animated the hilarious sequence where Brom Bones and Ichabod fight for Katrina's affection. Absolute Genius. Fantastic timing. Watch it again on DVD!
Ollie Johnston, one of a kind !!

Happy Halloween, everybody !!!

  1. I watched you interviewing him on a DVD bonus. You were talking about "Lady and the Tramp". The respect and veneration you've expressed toward him like a pupil toward his master, was very moving.

  6. I love that part in Sleepy Hallow. Are those drawings xerox copies of the pencil test? One doubt, was Woolie Reitherman the one who animated the chase sequence? Happy Halloween for you too!

Andreas, this always confuses me, for example: is the door also animated by Ollie, or by someone else?

    1. I his rough animation Ollie would animate the door, but without any detail. An effects animator did that afterwards.

  8. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is probably my personal favorite. I love the dramatic shift that takes place in the movie once Brom Bones sings The Headless Horseman song. How everything up to that point is more or less lighthearted and fun, especially when Icabod appears to dance with himself after the horseshoe hits Brom in the head while trying to get out of the well. This cartoon has everything PLUS Bing Crosby! A true great. Happy Halloween indeed!

  9. I saw Ichabod & Mr. Toad for the first time in years, this year...what a revelation! What the mid- to late-forties films may lack in pathos, they more than make up for with unabashed entertainment and superb animation. Here, you posted one of the scenes that really made me lose it.

Hope you enjoyed your Halloween. And here's a belated Happy Birthday to Ollie, for all the joy and inspiration he gave us.
