Pinocchio Art

Just like the personality animation in Disney's Pinocchio the world that was created for the characters to live in is spectacular. Many different locations had to be explored, from an Alpine village and an amusement park island to the bottom of the ocean and the inside of a whale.
Vis dev art as well as layouts were carefully planned and rendered with light that reminds me of Rembrandt.
Every piece of art you see from this film indicates just how much of a labor of love it was for everyone involved in the production. Of course the Disney artists had deadlines to go by, but studying this kind of work you can almost count the overtime hours, and see their determination to make Pinocchio the absolute best film possible.

  1. The sprawling town, with patched together paper, is fascinating. As is the lighting in the one below it.

Quick question, if anyone has a guess. What was the medium used for 'The lobster Inn'? Charcoal? The lighting just seems so smooth and beautiful.

  2. Seeing this gorgeous artwork (along with the final product) it's such an amazing surprise that they made that film in such a short span of time, including 6 months of work that Walt scrapped. It's probably the most beautifully-crafted film that they ever did. Everything's so detailed and lush, and it all holds together so well.

I especially love the little "hints" for upcoming films in that first image, including "The Concert Feature".

  8. Pinocchio was always my favorite early Disney feature and I think it was because of all the fantastical locations they went to.

  9. This is a half decade late but Andreas this is a wonderful post. I've fallen in love with the pieced together village night scene and can't for the life of me find the image anywhere else. Do you know if it's in a book or a museum somewhere? I'm desperate for a print of it or at least to see higher res image. Thanks so much for your creativity and for this wonderful blog.
