Bambi Vis Dev Art

In their 1990 book Bambi, The Story and the Film, Frank and Ollie don't identify the artist who produced these magnificent poetic renderings. They probably didn't remember.
The use of light gives the settings a magical, dreamlike quality. There is subtle shading on the characters, even though the final appearance of Bambi, Thumper and all the others would mostly consists of thin ink lines and flat cel paint.
Nonetheless these drawings sure helped to establish the mood for one of the most beautiful films ever made.

    Thanks for sharing.
(Is there any chance to get them in even higher resolution?)

    1. These are pretty high res already. What you see is the rough texture of the paper.

  2. Truly wonderful.

The amount of detail and quality that they achieved with Bambi, never ceases to amaze me.

  3. that layout sketch with bambi coming closer to the foreground completely blew me away. nobody could draw something so atmospheric today anymore. btw andreas, I just want to mention - they were not drawn on paper, it was vellum. that's why you see the texture. and for bigger smooth grey areas they used graphite powder and spread it with a piece of cotton soaked with cigarettelighter gas ( benzin ). then they erased with a sharpened eraser-pen thin grass or foliage shapes out of that basic-grey. the very black areas were done with thick sticks of up to 10B graphite. they must have looked like coalminers at the end of the day.

  6. From what I just looked about him, he seems to be the one who did these drawings. But, lets answer Andreas.

  9. Oooh, wow. I love the one with the parade of Bambis chronicling Bambi's walk through the forest. It's too bad the artist's name is unknown because I'd like to look for more of his/her work.
