Versions of Tigger

It's kind of funny to see early concepts of Tigger, before the final design was set.
This is the cover of sheet music for the Sherman song "The Wonderful thing about Tiggers"
You can see that Winnie the Pooh is finalized, he looks like he appears in the classic short films.
Tigger not so much. Milt Kahl must have been busy with another assignment, he certainly had nothing to do with this temporary design, or the way story artists depicted the bouncy character.

There is a looong way from these unrefined concept designs to what Milt finally came up with.
Milt loves to draw some of his characters with an underbite mouth configuration. Madame Mim, Shere Khan, Bagheera and the Fisherman Bear from Bedknobs & Broomsticks to name a few.
Tigger is no exception. In this case it adds personality and looks more interesting, graphically.
One of Marc Davis' favorite Disney Characters.

  1. Oh no i hate that, I saw it wen I was 3 or 4 years old in 1997 but i don't like Winnie the Pooh I don't know why Disney made that in the 70s I don't think Walt Disney will not be appreciated. 😦😧

    1. I like better Fairy tales of Princesses stuff like Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Snow White, Aladdin, Frozen, Cinderella and Tangled. I grew up with Fairy tales this are my favorite movies.

  2. I will admit Tigger's exuberance frightened me at first, but "The New Adventures" cemented him as the funniest character in the show (and some poignant character development, too)

    1. I'm sure the later Pooh-related stuff like "The Tigger Movie" probably helped flesh out the character more than the one or two appearances in these earlier shorts, of course back then, that was all we had.

  3. Tigger has always been a favorite of mine, whether it was the shorts or The New Adventures show or whatever, he was always a really fun character.

  4. Thanks so much for this blog, Andreas! I grew up wanting to be a Disney animator, but somewhere along the way I lost touch with that dream and forgot to be true to myself...so I pursued a different type of art...but a couple of years ago I rediscovered my love of animation, and your blog has been a part of that! Now I hope to one day work in animation and I feel like I'm finally back on the correct path that I had abandoned in my late teens. Thanks again for sharing so much! It inspires me to keep on drawing.

  5. Wow, did that cover actually make it to print?
In any case, it's great to see Kahl take on simpler, broader characters than usual, handled with his incredible control. I bet he really liked doing Tigger
