"Don't worry about me!"

...Mowgli proclaims to Bagheera, who for the moment is fed up with the boy's reluctance to be taken back to the man village.

This is a very simple scene animated by Milt Kahl. There is subtle movement within one pose. The body attitude is defiance, Mowgli's clenched fists show his rebellious temper. What a shame that The Jungle Book film presentation on Disney + is a 16 x 9 format. It completely cuts off Mowgli's lower body. The movie's proper format is 4 x3.

These copies of Milt's rough animation drawings were given to me by Dave Michener, who did assistant work on the film.

  1. Beautiful drawings.
It kinda bothers me how several of the older movies were cropped to 16:9. Not sure if there's a specific reason for it.

    1. Isn't that how it was released to DVD as well? I seem to remember discussions about what was the correct format, and how it was shown in cinemas, but I don't remember any definitive answer.

    2. 4x3 is the exact aspect ratio.Sword in the Stone, Aristocats, Robin Hood, all 4x3.

    3. Torbjörn, I'm not sure about the DVDs because I only had them on VHS, and those were indeed 4:3

    4. This is quite a difficult discussion. Regarding IMDb, Jungle book's negatives were in the standard acadamy ratio (1.37:1) open matte, however cinema presentations were done matted, resulting in a 1.78:1 ratio.
