We had such an interesting variety of materials for the Jungle Book exhibition at the Walt Disney Family Museum.
Obviously lots of original art, pencil tests, video interviews and more.
This is a document I found particularly interesting.
Director Woolie Reitherman sends an official note to storyman Bill Peet. Bill and Walt had already faced off in disagreement over Peet's story treatment and the selection of character voices.
Here Woolie is setting up a meeting for the three of them in an effort to discuss and hopefully settle some of these points of contention.
You can tell from the tone in Woolie's inter-office-note that the situation is somewhat serious.
I just realized that I posted this item 60 years after the original memo was sent. Almost to the day...what a coincidence!
Bill Peet wanted Howard Morris to voice Bagheera and Thurl Ravenscroft to voice Baloo? I simply can't picture that working at all. Good thing we wound up getting Sebastian Cabot and Phil Harris in the final film.

ReplyDeleteMich hat dieser Post extrem lange beschäftigt...In meiner Vorstellung hatten sich Storyartists schon immer bei Storyboardbesprechungen den Äußerungen und Kritikpunkten zu beugen und alles widerstandslos den Wünschen entsprechend abzuändern .
ReplyDeleteOb sich einige von ihnen bei einer hohen Anzahl von Streichungen und harschen Kritiken irgendwann wie Cinderella fühlten, wenn deren Arbeit wie ihr Kleid von den "bösen" Stiefschwestern in Fetzen gerissen wurde?...
Ich habe keine Ahnung wie viel ein Story Artist hinnehmen darf und ab wann er anfangen sollte seine Arbeit und seine Vorstellungen zu verteidigen.
Ich bewundere Bill Peets Mut und Talent!
Mir fällt es aber schwer eine Berechtigung für seine Kritik zu finden, wenn ich nur die Informationen aus Mr Reithermans Note heranziehen.
Da drängt sich bei mir eher der Verdacht auf, dass der eigentliche Grund für Bill Peets Ärger, Wut und Sorge in den sozialen Spannungen in seinem Arbeitsumfeld und der schlechten Chemie zwischen Peet und Disney zu finden waren.
Nach der Note zufolge ist Bill Peet aufgrund seiner Übergriffigkeit für das von Bill Peet als schlecht empfundene Arbeitsklima verantwortlich.
Anstatt Bill Peet den schwarzen Peter zuzuschieben, gefällt mir die Vorstellung eines für Bill Peet nicht optimal verlaufenen Befreiungsschlages weitaus besser! 😊
