Geraldine Page inspires Medusa

At Disney each time animators started exploring a new character assignment, it became very useful to do some research on the character's voice actor. Before animating Scar I looked at photos and watched film sequences with Jeremy Irons. You never know if you might find interesting expressions or gestures that could influence and benefit your animated performance.

I am certain that Milt Kahl did the same when he started animating Madame Medusa in The Rescuers. Milt mentioned that he had observed Geraldine Page for a little while during her voice recordings at the studio. I imagine that photos of the actress were available to him for further study. Of course I have no idea if Milt was inspired by these press photos shown here from previous films....but I wonder.

  2. On this talk about Arcane, Alexis Wanneroy showed some comparisons of Medusa, as you said, Milt imprinted a lot more character and it's far from 1:1 copy, so it's hard to tell if he was really inspired by those or are just coincidence, but I add the clip just in case someone is interested.

  3. I'm still astonished that Milt Kahl animated 99% of Madame Medusa taking into account the character's screen time and the fact that Kahl was in his 60s at the time the movie went into animation production.

    1. It really is astonishing. For comparison, Marc Davis drew EVERY scene with Cruella. Milt ALSO drew scenes with Snoops, Penny and the alligators.

  4. Medusa makes the whole movie....does Geraldine have n accent of some sort? What would that type of accent be called?
