In last year's published book Hercules, The Art of Gerald Scarfe, Gerald explains some of the difficulties he and I had coming up with the final design for the character of Hercules.
I remember Hercules being the last character design to be approved for animation. Gerald had tried a stylized version as well as a realistic approach. In the end the two of us worked things out together on a few sheets of animation paper, as you can see in the sketches below.
I think you'll find his notes and observations interesting, and I found Gerald lovely to work with.

Oh wow, I didnt realize Hercules' design was a colaboration. I will need to get that book because I absolutely LOVE Hercules, its so underrated. Imo its the best of the "late renaissance" films (which is what I call Pocohantas - Emperor's New Groove lol).
ReplyDeleteScarfe is a wizard! You must've been thrilled to work with him. Thank you for sharing these scans.
ReplyDeletei do love the work of gerald scarfe, i got to work on a project of his and cameron mackintosh a few years after this and even just drawing in his style was great fun... also i remember hercules coming out when i was at university and it was a huge event, so much fun at the time!
Danke fürs Posten! ☺️
