Bambi Art

Your guess is as good a mine, as far as who drew the beautiful sketch above. Perhaps Frank Thomas, but I am not sure. Doesn't matter, it is obvious that the artist had a lot of affection for these characters. As did everyone else who was involved in the production.
Milt Kahl drew these appealing studies of Thumper, and I think that a couple of poses represent the cutest application of squash and stretch ever.

Just like the films that preceded Bambi, there were a number of art directors involved in creating the look for the movie. And they all shared one thing with Rembrandt, a mastery of the use of light. Absolutely breathtaking!

This is a magazine article from September of 1942 that promotes the film by showing mostly sketches. Frank Thomas and Milt Kahl created layouts for some of the illustrations. (Young Bambi meeting Feline is a Marc Davis drawing).

You can see some of those original layouts in this previous post:

  1. A huge THANK YOU for sharing these precious gems!
If the entire life and deeds of Walt Disney can be summarized in one work of his, this masterpiece would win the first price.
And everlasting respect for the 9 old men and all the artist, who achieved the impossible with this feature film.
And everlasting gratitude for your generosity!

  2. Gorgeous. I love Bambi so much, and I seriously get the chills whenever I watch it. They way the animators and artists handled it so lovingly -- I'm speechless. This sketches make me appreciate the art and beauty of the film even more.
Thanks, as always, for sharing, Andreas.

  3. Aside from Tyrus Wong, the single artist with the biggest artistic influence over Bambi was the great Tom Cordrick--art director of the first 5 Disney features. Tyrus Wong praises Codrick, and said he was known as "Walt's Secret Weapon."

  4. I absolutely adore those value drawings, including the ones you've posted before. There's something about them that I could just gaze at for hours on end, such a fluidity and life about them. And of course those sketches! So much life in those lines. Everything captures the delicacy and refined nature of the final film. Thank you for sharing.
