Roger Rabbit Scenes III

After having finished a few scenes that involved combining animation drawings with live action photo stats, I was starting to feel relieved and a bit more comfortable tackling new assignments.
As usual it was super important to make sure that the physical contact between cartoon character and live actor would come off as believable.
Here Roger is resisting Bob Hoskins' attempt to throw him out of the apartment. He is yelling and kicking throughout these scenes, but the area of contact (Hoskins' hands and Roger's rear) needed to be in sync. No sliding around allowed!

The love letter was held up by thin robotic arms, which I needed to cover up with Roger's body.

Really loved animating this scene with Smartass, leader of the Weasels. He grabs a live action chair, pushes it across the room before jumping on to it in order to get closer to Hoskins' face.

The live action pistol again was manipulated by a thin robotic arm. "Where's the rabbit?"
This stuff wasn't easy to do, but at the same time SO MUCH FUN!

  2. I remember this Smartass scene distinctly as one of the more convincing scenes in the film! Well done as usual Sir! ;)

  3. Always great to read more behind-the-scenes info on this great classic! A making-of book is long overdue, although I heard rumors about one in the works some years ago.

Andreas, there is a question that has bugged me for some years and that you might be able to answer: I own the catalog from the Sotheby's auction of Roger Rabbit cels in June '89. It contains pictures of many cels, of course without the 'shadow' layer that was added by ILM. There are three cels from what is probably an alternative version of the scene in your post where Valiant is pushing Roger out the door. In one of them Roger is drawn with big brown eyes and long eyelashes. Do you know what the idea behind this was and why it was not used in the movie? We always hear about the 'pig head' scene being cut, but apparently there were more scenes that were fully animated and colored before ending up on the cutting room floor. The catalog also shows a cel of the Toontown sky from the Yosemite Sam scene in which Mary Poppins' silhouette can be seen. So that would be another example.
Any light that you (or anyone else) can shed on this would be much appreciated!

  4. Andreas, what were you studying to prepare for this assignment? Roger Rabbit is so elastic, I was wondering if you were studying Brer Rabbit, or another Disney character?
